When a Hymn Brings You Back Home

For the last four years, I had the joy of helping shape something simple and yet deeply meaningful at Community Church: our Gospel Hymn Sing. When we gathered for the eighth one this spring, I was reminded again that music carried memories in a way few things could. The idea started when I realized the hymns I chose on my own did not always connect with the songs that had shaped other people’s lives. So, I invited people to help plan the program by requesting the hymns that had stayed with them through the years.

What I loved most was seeing how often those requests carried a story. Someone would ask for a hymn they had sung around a Thanksgiving table with family. Another person would remember a song that belonged to grandparents who were no longer here. Even when different people filled out the forms, many of them still asked for the same songs. That told me something important. These hymns had not only been sung; they had been woven into people’s lives. They had comforted people, taught them, and stayed with them long after the moment had passed.

We kept the event moving, usually singing one or two verses of each song so we could fit twenty to twenty-five hymns into an hour. The band helped bring those requests to life, especially the songs that needed more rhythm and energy than I could carry alone from the piano. Pulling it all together sometimes meant late nights, and this spring it came right on the heels of Easter, when church life was already full. Even so, the effort felt worthwhile, because I knew we were making room for people to hear their own story in the music.

I came away from each Hymn Sing grateful for more than a good musical event. I saw how God used familiar songs to open hearts, stir gratitude, and remind people of his faithfulness. In a room full of voices, memories, and shared faith, I was encouraged all over again that music was never just background. It helped us remember where God had met us, and it gave us a way to praise him together.
