Show Choir Camp
This past summer, I had the joy (and challenge!) of leading our annual Show Choir Camp. It’s kind of like Vacation Bible School met singing and dancing and then threw in a whole lot of energy. We welcomed 80 kids from ten different school districts, from kindergarten through sixth grade. Alongside 14 teen volunteers and 10 dedicated adults, we kicked off one of our biggest camps yet.
Each morning started with chatter and kids reconnecting, but quickly turned to prayer. What has consistently humbled me (besides running on very little sleep) is watching children step up to the microphone to pray in front of their peers. Some are raised in Christian homes; others, not at all. But all show bravery and innocence that points to something bigger.
Throughout the week, we memorized a verse each day. They have a lanyard with five Bible verses. They are not just cute name tags but instead they’re seeds that get planted. By Thursday, we shared the Gospel clearly, building up to the invitation to follow Jesus. It isn’t just singing and dancing but it’s life-changing truth wrapped in five busy days.
Show Choir Camp reaches beyond our church walls. About 60–70% of the kids come from the school where I teach, but many others hear about us through word of mouth. We’ve even had families visit our church services because of it.
One child, who faced significant trauma and missed much of the school year, ended up leading a prayer and singing a solo. Watching her come alive during camp wrecked me in the best way.
Our church showed up big—through giving, volunteering, and just loving people well. When strangers feel at home, something holy is happening.
